A.D. 1999

The nation of Aquila decides to conquer the earth and it's up to you to stop their plan of conquest. Simple!

'99: The Last War is a fixed shump reminiscent to Space Invaders and Phoenix, where you move a laser cannon across the bottom of the screen and fire at robotic enemies and descending alien spaceships through six stages.

Version Differences

Hmmm...
To do:
Gameplay differences between versions.

Five sets (excluding the bootleg set 99lastwarb, which is a carbon copy of 99lastwar) are present in MAME:

  • repulse, the initial Japanese version released by Sega.
  • 99lastwark, the revised Japanese version released by Kyugo (the same company who made the game's hardware), licensed from Sega. Aside from the new title, it's identical to the previous set in terms of gameplay.
  • 99lastwar, the first North American version released by Proma, licensed from Sega.
  • 99lastwara, the second North American version, which features some significant changes in terms of gameplay.
  • sonofphx, a bootleg version credited to an unknown company called Associated Overseas MFR, Inc. In MAME nomenclature, this set is labeled as "(bootleg of Repulse)", hinting that is based on that set. The name of the company also hints that this version was made to be released somewhere other than Japan and the US.
