Bejeweled, the one game that popularised the match-3 genre game massively. Most people who at least heard of the game would have figured out how it works: Swapping adjacent gems with your mouse to form 3 or more matches of the same colour. Then we have cascades for boosting scores and modes for a different challenge... Enough said.

Unused Music Sequences

All of the music sequences below are generally segments of the tracks themselves, that are scrapped throughout the songs' composition.

Autonomus

Offset 1, with tempo 125. Alternative version of offset 20 with an instrument layer being extended. Unlisted in the music track file's surface.

Offset 9, with tempo 125. Unlisted.

Offset 11, with tempo 125. Readily similar with offset 20. Unlisted.

Data Jack

Offset 0, with tempo 133.

Offsets 50,51, with tempo 133.

Offsets 20,24,25,24,26,27,28,43, tempo 133. The longest unused sequence string. This string wasn't meant to play at all in even the original version of the track, but due to most trackers ignoring the loop point, the string plays right afterwards. This doesn't apply to the other unused sequences in this track, however.

(Source: Skaven, @user-143481492-674541967: There were some unused patterns I had left at the end of the song after the loop point that were not meant to play, but some tracker players apparently ignored the loop point so they ended up playing, making the song longer.)

Network

Offset 10, with tempo 125. Likely used to end the track.

Offset 11, with tempo 125. Unlisted.

Offset 41, with tempo 125. Unlisted.

Shockwave Installer CVS Remnants

Hmmm...
To do:
Meaning of BL?

InstallDiamondMineBL.exe (1.71 sw) from Shockwave contains a CVS directory in the Presetup folder. The root mentions a user named Brian, likely Brian Fiete, one of the game's programmers who also worked on maintaining PopCap's game engine.

Unused Sounds

goodbye1.ogg

A goodbye voice. Judging from future games in the series it is meant to play upon exiting the game, but was never implemented.

welcome1.ogg

A welcome voice that is also not played within the game for similar reasons.

Diamond Mine was the initial name for Bejeweled when it was first published, which explains the presence of these duplicated (but renamed) strings.

Command-Line Parameters

  • -version Does nothing. Supposed to display the version details in another window but doesn't work.
  • -play Plays a recorded file.
  • -recnum Records sequentially named demos each time you run the game. The filenames of the saved demos are "Popcap1.dmo", "Popcap2.dmo", "Popcap3.dmo", etc., with "Popcap" being replaced with a specified file name with -demofile.
  • -playnum Starts Bejeweled with the previously recorded demo files sequentially.
  • -record Records gameplay, this will get saved as a DMO file.
  • -demofile Specifies the filename for the played or recorded demo and only works when used with the "-play" or "-record" command line parameters (see below). The correct syntax for this parameter is "-demofile=MyDemo.dmo" (minus the quotes), substituting "MyDemo.dmo" with your demo filename of choice (either a previously recorded demo to play, or a filename to save a new demo that you wish to record).
  • -crash Simulates a game crash.
  • -screensaver Doesn't do anything. Might be from Insaniquarium due to it being the first game from PopCap to have a screensaver.
  • -changedir Changes the directory of the game.

Icon

Earlier versions of Bejeweled originally featured the Blue Gem as it appeared in Diamond Mine, the game Bejeweled would evolve from. By 1.85, the sprite would later be replaced with the gem’s in-game appearance (unless it is being shown on a 256-color display, in which case it falls back onto the original sprite); albeit with a thick outline. 1.87 features the Blue Gem’s appearance in Bejeweled 2, albeit hue-shifted to a cyan color.

Older releases prior to 1.87 featured the old PopCap logo on the title screen; for 1.87, the background was tweaked and the PopCap logo was updated, before the PopCap logo was shortly updated again, with the registered trademarks being replaced with trademarks.

Mac OS X Windows
Bejeweled macosx title.jpg Bejeweled title.png

The Mac OS X version of the game features the "DELUXE" byline on the Bejeweled logo, which is not present on the PC version. Oddly, a version of the logo with the DELUXE byline appears on the Trial Version's DRM launcher.

Partner Versions and Diamond Mine

Bejeweled was originally called Diamond Mine but due to copyright issues, with an unrelated game already having a similar title, Microsoft suggested the name of Bejeweled, a pun based off of Bedazzled, among other alternative names that never got revealed or chosen. However, some partner versions, specifically from RealArcade (until 2008), Shockwave.com, Yahoo! Games, Zylom, and Oberon Media, use the older branding.

1.21 "RealArcade" 1.5sw "Shockwave.com" 1.5y "Yahoo! Games" 1.6z "Zone.com" 1.84 "Zylom" 1.84 "GameHouse" 1.862 "Oberon Media"

Most partner versions feature the partner's company logo in the bottom left corner, but some (like Diamond Mine 1.8sw) do not.

1.5sw "Shockwave.com" 1.5y "Yahoo! Games" Bejeweled 1.5 1.84 "Zylom"
Diamond-Mine-1.5sw-options.png Diamond-Mine-1.5y-options.png Bejeweled 1.5-options.png Diamond Mine 1.84 Zylom-options.png

The Shockwave.com and Yahoo! Games releases of Diamond Mine lack update checking functionality, and as such, the options menu for both are different and lack both the Check for Updates and Visit PopCap.com for More Games buttons;
in it's place, the Shockwave.com release has a Click Here to Try Alchemy button.

The Zylom and GameHouse releases have a much narrower Done button that doesn't take up the space of the menu window, and has the Custom Cursors toggle below the Fullscreen toggle instead of being located to the right of the toggle.

Wrong Music After Continuing Time Trial Mode

Continuing a Time Trial game when the user opens the game again in versions with continue functionality present starting with 1.41 will not play Data Jack; it plays Network, the music found in Normal mode, instead.

Pause on Any Keypress

The Board::KeyChar (playfield) function takes any keypress to pause the game, normally the Space key would do that. KeyChar is part of widgets of the PopCap Framework where keypresses are typically used typing or ingame debug keys, suggesting they removed too much of the logic from release, which even went towards checking the type of key.

Internal Project Name

The game is internally referred to as WinDM[4], starting PopCap's internal naming trend of Win (Windows) before the internal name of the game. DM which is most definitely the original name of the game before PopCap turned it into Bejeweled.

WinBej is another internal game of the game which is really self-explanatory.
