Development Timeline

2004

  • The tech demo begins development.

2005

  • 4 February: Half-Life 2: Lost Coast is announced in a Steam update. Major Counter-Strike: Source and Half-Life 2: Deathmatch updates are also announced.[1]
  • 18 May: Lost Coast is shown off at E3 2005, in the "Games for Windows" booth.
  • 13 June: Eurogamer publishes a preview of the tech demo.[2]
  • 5 August: Valve announces that the game will be ready "in a couple of weeks", and that it will feature developer commentary.[3]
  • 27 October: Lost Coast is released for free to anyone who has purchased Half-Life 2 from Steam.

E3 2005

Footage from E3 2005, showing Lost Coast along with Half-Life 2‍ '​s Xbox version, and a QnA session from Valve employees. While the Lost Coast portion is very close to the final techdemo, there's still a few differences to be found:

  • At 11:31, the Gunship Hunter-Chopper appears, however, no Combine soldiers ambush Gordon alongside it.
