This page details one or more prototype versions of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Pool of Radiance (NES).
This prototype is documented on Hidden Palace.
A localization prototype of the NES Pool of Radiance was found, dumped, and released by the Nolan Brothers to Hidden Palace on December 26, 2024.
Similar to the Hillsfar prototype, most of the differences involve the text. At this point, the script appears to have been directly translated from the Japanese version and has not yet been altered to comply with Nintendo of America's content policies.
Pre-Generated Characters
The pre-generated characters have been changed and are now fully-leveled with very powerful equipment. It's possible these characters were created for the US localization team for easier playtesting.
- Gwydion, besides being fully leveled and powerfully equipped, was kept pretty much the same.
- Felgar was changed from a Half-Elf Fighter/Mage/Cleric, a multi-class not normally available in the NES version, to a Human Cleric.
- Goldleaf was changed from an Elf Fighter/Mage/Thief to a Human Mage.
Text Differences
| To do: Document all text differences between prototype and final. |
The prototype appears to be a direct translation of the Japanese Famicom version. Primarily, the references to religion and words related to death have been changed in the final. For example, the word "kill" was changed to "slay", "die" became "expired", "chapel" and "temple" were changed to "shrine", and "priests" are called "clerics". There were also references to blood in the prototype that were completely stripped from the NES version.
Another interesting change is the word "evil" being changed to "wicked". This is interesting due to some of the character alignments having "evil" in them (Lawful Evil, Neutral Evil, and Chaotic Evil), in which the alignment names were kept in the final.
General Differences
- During an encounter, the option to "parlay" was changed to "parley".
- During combat, the target is now just a thicker version of the main cursor.
- There is a glitch which sometimes prevents a player to use projectile weapons, but it's currently unknown how the glitch works, as it seems to be at random.

New Phlan
- The Arms and Armor clerk was originally called Armorer.
- The Shopkeeper was originally called General Items clerk.
- The Priests found at the various shrines (originally temples) are now Clerics.
- The shrines/temples originally had the spell Raise Dead, which was later titled Raise the Perished.
- The Stone to Flesh spell originally cost 2000GP, as opposed to the 20000GP in the final.

* of the Arms Shop works 24 hours a day, but if you enter through the back door, he will deal with you. |
For some reason, the Famicom version gave one of the arms dealers in New Phlan the name Greco. This was omitted from the North American release, and isn't even mentioned in the computer versions. It was probably cut from the final version because of this; it is unlikely Nintendo would have requested the name to be removed.

The random fights in the tavern were originally "drunken" brawls. The word was dropped most likely at Nintendo's request.
Training Hall
The prototype has this curious string of text, spoken by the trainer:
I think that it's err in GEN!
which was removed from the final.
When choosing to fight a duel, the speaker is credited to "Information" in the prototype, as well as a reference to death. This was changed to the clerk speaking, and the training hall trying not to "harm" adventurers in a duel.
