Hmmm...
To do:
Document some general/texture changes and all of the levels after THZ1.

In August 2023, a Sonic Doom 2 developer, Saxman, gave SSNTails several files he had sent to him back in 2000, including the SRB2XMAS.WAD file for 0.90, and notably the full source code and maps for SRB2 around this time, all dated March 2000. This prototype is similar to a mix of Christmas Test 0.92 and Christmas Test 0.93 in terms of the engine, however it contains earlier versions of the game's maps than any other known release. All of the maps are contained in their own separate WAD files, as this made it much easier to work on the levels.

If you want to download the prototype, a link to the source code and binaries can be found here.

General

  • Gameplay-wise, this prototype resembles Christmas 0.93.
  • Unlike most other versions of SRB2, this version requires a copy of DOOM2.WAD.
    • Both SRB2.WAD and TEST2.WAD must be loaded before you start the game, as they contain many required assets, sprites, and textures.
  • The counters on the HUD use the same font they did in Halloween and before.
  • The lives counter is missing.

  • In SRB2.WAD, a full set of older Sonic sprites is found, however these are never used because TEST2.WAD overrides them on startup.

However, these can be restored by removing the new set of sprites from TEST2.WAD. When these sprites are used, Sonic will almost always use different variations of his death sprite and his jump sprite.

  • The menus are the same as Christmas 0.93's, but they use the graphics from the Halloween tech demo.
    • As the "Time Attack" option was not present in Halloween, it has a unique graphic not seen anywhere else. Time Attack was a planned mode for SRB2 that wouldn't be publicly available until 1.09.4, 6 years after this prototype.

Graphics/Textures

  • The picture used for the title screen is entirely different compared to any version released after this, resembling the version used the Halloween tech demo without the "HALLOWEEN" text.

  • This version uses the iteration of GFZROCK seen in several prerelease videos and screenshots, most notably the SAGE 2000 Trailer.

  • The THZRIP and THZPIPE textures are not present.
  • Deep Sea Zone only has two textures in this build.
    • The first one is a rock texture, taken directly from the Games Factory version.
    • The second one is a recolored version of THZROCK in this build. It goes completely unused.

Levels

Greenflower Zone Act 1

This version's GFZ is mostly the same as the version found in Christmas 0.93, with a few differences.

  • The fan found near the beginning of the level is replaced with a Crawla.
  • The spring next to it is missing.

Greenflower Zone Act 2

This iteration of GFZ2 is notably completely different than in Demo 2, as this version of GFZ2 was merged into GFZ1 sometime in mid-2000.

It much better resembles the second half of GFZ1 from Demo 1, but with lots of differences.

  • The level is noticably scaled up. When it was merged into GFZ1, everything was made smaller.
  • There are four monitors here, meant as a quick way of testing their effects. In this build, most of the shields placed here are nonfunctional, aside from the basic blue shield.

  • The two bridges are missing. Many of these changes involve a lack of FOFs (floor over floor), which would be implemented into SRB2 starting with Demo 1.
  • Due to an issue with placing objects above ground over a pool of water, the water is missing.
  • This section has three blocks here (also seen in SAGE 2000 material of GFZ1) instead of the bridge seen in later versions.
