Unused Graphic

Starting from offset 0x16B08 in the ROM is a font that seems to be directly taken from the game's original Arcade release, where it's used in the game's attract sequence and in the mode selection screen.
While some of these characters appear in the demo version, those starting from "レ" go completely unused.

Unused Text

QuarthMSX2-unusedstrings.png

Starting from offset 0x235C in the ROM is a sequence of positioned strings which display "RC769" and "TITLE DEMO" on-screen when drawn. This can be seen by changing the byte value at offset 0x2357 in the ROM from 0x72 to 0x5C. There doesn't seem to be any in-game method of causing this text to be displayed. RC769 is this game's product code.

Regional Differences

While it was common for Japanese MSX/2 games to be released in South Korea via unauthorized means, this version of Quarth was brought to the country officially, being published by Daou Infosys, under the name of Sagag-ui Bimil (사각의 비밀, translating to "The Secret of the Squares"). Note that this did not stop an unofficial port with the same title to be created, however.

  • In the Korean version, there's a small copyright disclamer that displays right after booting.

  • With the name change, came a new logo for the game, with a much more different design compared to the original baroque-themed approach.
