Murder Miners is the closest JForce Games has yet come to making a video game.
While mainly developed by JForce, the game (mostly the Steam version) was also caretaken by community developers known as the Murder Miners Hub, who produced major updates to the game during the latter half of its life. These updates and the MMH's willingness to share development info have produced a lot of hidden, cut, changed, or otherwise removed content.
Contents
Hidden Maps
Various maps left in the files that were made for development and past events.
WindowsGame1
A completely blue map used by the Murder Miners Hub as a chromakey background and for making something stand out in screenshots.[4] This map can be seen used in a Steam blog post for Update 40, showcasing new weapon animations.
"Block Set Grid" Maps
Maps made to quickly test changes to block properties. They were included in the default maps folder to help modders when creating custom block sets[4]. These maps were also used to showcase the expanded block sets in the "Update 40 Out Now" Steam news post.
Build And Relax Server
A variant of the "Build And Relax" map that includes a bunch of random structures. This map was used by the Murder Miners Hub staff on a Free Build dedicated server in December 2021. The server lasted for 4 days, but the version of the map included is saved from the first day.[4]
"Fog Maps"
A folder labeled "Fog Maps" contains map variants used in the 2020 Halloween event. These maps have hardcoded effects to give them a black skybox and dense black fog. With these effects becoming standard map options in Update 40, these maps and their hardcoded effects became deprecated and were left unused. The "Halloween Event Maps" folder would be used in its place in future events.
The Fog Maps folder contains the following maps:
- Cathedral of Awesome by The Largest Dog HLW
- Cavern HLW
- Coldwar X by AWLS HLW
- Cooldown HLW
- Dead Space HLW
- Dead Space Royale HLW

Hidden Gamemode Presets
Gamemode presets that are hidden from the gamemode selection menu.
Gamenight
When selected, it hosts Infection with the Gamenight tag and loads maps from the default Murder Match map pool oddly enough.
EggHunt2021
When selected, it hosts Speedrun Egg Hunt on the Egg Hunt 2021 map. It has functionally identical lobby settings as the Egg Hunt 2020-2021 preset, and its superfluousness with said preset is likely why it was hidden.
Hidden & Unused Graphics
Various graphics that are either typically inaccessible or go completely unused.
| To do: Alpha/MMX HUD Pickup Icons for non-cut pickups |
Alpha Miner Gun HUD Icon
A HUD icon for the Alpha Miner Gun exists in the textures for the "Alpha" and "Murder Miners X" HUD style. No actual weapon exists in the game, but developers have stated that it (unsurprisingly) would have been the Miner Gun with its old stats from the alpha, similar to the existing alpha weapons in the game.[4]
Murderpedia Backdrop Test
A placeholder icon of the pistol, stated by developers to have been used as to test image backdrops behind the text on Murderpedia pages.[4]
Unused Block Sets
Block textures in Murder Miners are stored as raw .png files in the "Texture" folder. Included in this folder are a few sets that are not used in-game.
Cave Crawler
A wholly original texture set of caving-themed blocks made in a hand-drawn-esque style by DarkHare. The text crediting bigdaddy2 and Pinny was copied over from the default atlas texture at the time and was simply never overwritten.[4]
MurderMining
Included and later removed during the Update 41 public betas is a version of the Murder_Mining block set with the "Prison Metal" Block replaced with "Controls 8". It was otherwise the same as the used Murder Mining set at the time.
NewTextures
A block_properties.xml file can be found for a "newtextures" set. This was used by the MMH during the Update 40 betas to get feedback on new textures before the main "Default" block set would be updated.[4] The set is a mix of block textures from what is now "Default" and "Classic 2019-2024." The texture was included in the game during many Update 40 betas and has since been removed, leaving just the block property file.
Spiral
A half-finished set comprised of spiral blocks given the color palettes of the respective blocks they are replacing. The other half of the set consists of blocks squished to a 16x16 pixel size.
Update3Beta
This set is the block atlas from an unreleased beta build of the game. It was used as reference for the "Classic 2014-2019" block set.[4]
Unfinished Weapons
| To do: Create and add YouTube video demonstration |
During the Murder Miners Hub's time developing for the game, new weapons were added to the game, with some never being finished. These are typically inaccessible unless a mapper used debug menus to place them in their level.
Incendiary Grenade
While no functional weapon exists in the game, a model for an Incendiary Grenade was added to the game during the Update 41 public betas. Developers have stated that it essentially acted as Zombie Vomit usable by Miners.[4]
Murder LMG
A weapon that started out as a mod from one of the MMH developers, eventually being worked into the actual game.[5] It has a clip of 75 bullets with one additional drum in reserve. It fires slow, reloads slow, overheats quickly with a slow cooldown, but has the benefit of high damage, tight spread and a scope alt-fire.
Firing while scoped seems to be bugged to where holding down the fire button will increase its overheat meter extremely fast, even when the gun isn't actively firing. Firing other weapons also counters towards the LMG's overheat, which can lead to a humorous bug where other weapons may generate steam constantly.
The placeholder model is seemingly based on the SAW weapon from the Halo series.
Railgun
A variant of the Sniper Rifle. It has a clip size of 4 and 12 bullets in reserve. It deals pitiful damage normally but can charge up its damage while scoped in. A full charge can instantly kill a miner when hitting any part of their body. Its model is taken from an unused Battle Rifle design made by JForce.[4] It also has the same fire rate and rainbow tracers from the OP Sniper Rifle.
Shield Generator
A support weapon using a modified Miner Gun model. It has a clip of 200 which slowly recharges over time. It quickly fires small energy orbs which will home in on players and overheal their shields to 150. Using the alt-fire will destroy the weapon but leave a puddle on the floor that charges the shield of anyone stepping in it.
Test
A test weapon added to be used as a base for modders.[4] It uses the Machine Gun model from the 2012 Alpha and early release versions of the game. It has the same clip and reserve count as the Machine Gun. The Test weapon does an extremely small amount of damage, taking multiple full clips to kill even a single player.
Hidden Skins & Cosmetics
Various weapon skins, armors skins, badges and an entire hats system can be found in the game, but are not typically obtainable or visible in the customization menu without staff permissions or debug enabled.
Sentry Skins
The Sentry Turret has a whole host of skins from existing sets made for it but cannot be normally accessed from the skin menu. Sentries were planned to be skinnable with the release of Update 40 and could partially be done so during the early Update 40 betas, but struggles with properly getting different skins to appear for different players' sentries led to the MMH shelving Sentry skins.[4] If applied, the skins are visible on the sentry when held in the player's hands, and dropped on the ground but show up as the default skin when deployed in the world.
Kiss (Miner)
A variant of the Kiss zombie skin but as a Miner armor skin, left unused due to becoming deformed when using many different helmets.[4]
Clash Badge
A badge of the letter C taken from an older version of the logo for Super Clash Crossover a currently unreleased game by JForce. The badge is set up to be unlocked if the user owns the game on Steam.
Hats
Hats are a new cosmetic type planned to release with Update 40. They were initially accessible to everyone during the Update 40 betas, but due to various clipping issues that were not dealt with, were shelved with the hat menu removed for the proper update release.[4] It was later made accessible again during the Update 41 betas but only if Debug mode is enabled. Equipping a hat will make it visible to yourself and other players, but they may clip through certain helmets or occasionally float above the player.
Nameplates
Player nameplate cosmetics that were planned to release with Update 40. These would appear behind your username when in the lobby menu.[4]
Hidden Cheats and Debug Settings
Chat Commands
There are two hidden chat commands that aren't shown in the command list. "/fart" will play a fart noise along with a zombie "Ew" voiceline. "/bigheadmode" and "/bighead" will give everyone in the server a massive head, this only works if sent by the server host.
Debug Mode
Pressing "L" on the keyboard will enable Debug Mode. Additional options can be selected in settings if Debug Mode is enabled before opening the menus. Various secret settings can only be found with debug mode enabled.
Network Test Minigame
Designed to test networking latency on the Xbox 360. The minigame can be accessed from the Main menu if Debug Mode is enabled. Doing so lets you join or host a game in which you play as a white circle that leaves a black trail around. Once more than one player is in the session, a game of tag will commence. This will turn one player yellow, this player can transfer the yellow tag to someone else by running into them. When a player is tagged, they will become frozen in place for a second before being able to move around again.
