The PlayStation Vita is released to the world, starting off strong but suffering a sudden and sharp decline by the end of year. Meanwhile, the Wii U is released worldwide, getting an early start on the eighth console generation. The Oculus Rift is unveiled to the world through Kickstarter, gaining loads of attention from the get-go. Windows 8 is released, completely changing the face of Windows (again) and with the intent on being both a PC and smartphone OS. There’s also the Neo Geo X, a Neo Geo emulation system.

...On the gaming side, Several town-builder games came out for iOS/Android systems, while Sleeping Dogs was released to critical acclaim. Rayman makes his return with Rayman Origins after half a decade of being side-lined by the Rabbids.

For indie games, Hotline Miami was released. Also, Slender: The Eight Pages comes out, kickstarting the whole "indie horror" games trend to come throughout the decade.
