June 4, 1997 Technical Demo

  This prototype is documented on Hidden Palace.

This technical demo of the game built on June 4 1997 contains both Arcade and Grand Prix modes.

Mode selection.

Grand Prix mode

• 

  Grand Prix mode main menu.

• 

  And odd pop up when pressing the Circle button, possibly ads were meant to feature in the game?

• 

  Circuit and race type selection screen. Only Silverstone and Nürburgring are available in Grand Prix mode.

• 

  Team/driver selection screen. Note the misaligned team & driver text.

• 

  Jacques Villeneuve's name and helmet appears but his photo is just a silhouette.

• 

  The preview image for McLaren shows it having the West tobacco sponsorship. This does not appear in the final game and the in-game car does not have the West logos. The logo can also be seen on Mika Hakkinen's race suit. No other team still has their tobacco sponsors.

• 

  The Prost team is called Ligier, their former name.

• 

  Jarno Trulli's name is misspelled. This typo would also feature in the final PC version.

• 

  Another minor typo, Tyrrell misspelled as Tyrell.

• 

  Grand Prix mode loading screen. Featuring Michael Schumacher in his Ferrari with Marlboro sponsorship visible. This loading screen would be replaced with a TV broadcast style loading screen later on.

Arcade mode

• 

  Arcade Mode race type selection.

• 

  A different looking difficulty select screen.

• 

  Track selection screen. The 3D circuit map looking oddly dim.

• 

  Car selection screen. Showing a 3D model of the McLaren with West tobacco sponsorship. Only McLaren appears to retain their tobacco sponsor.

• 

  The Prost car is listed as Ligier again here, but the icon has already been updated to Prost.

• 

  Loading screen for Arcade mode.
