| This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion. Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article? |
To do:
|
Welcome to the 1999 season of Real Racing Roots. Four teams and four manufacturers await you in R4: Ridge Racer Type 4.
PocketStation Support
| To do: Document this better. |
The Japanese version includes support for PocketStation allowing the player to unlock cars in the game between players. However, the PocketStation was never released overseas. Support for the PocketStation was brought over to the international versions and can be normally accessed through the Load/Save menu.
Unused Car Selection Graphics
These symbols are probably for Extra Trial teams, and are intended to be shown in the car selection screen. From left to right: White Angel (Age Solo Ecureuil), Assoluto Works (Assoluto Vulcano), Terrazi Works (Terrazi Utopia), Nightmare (Lizard Nightmare), and a Namco logo, probably for the 321st bonus Pac-Man car.
Regional Differences
| To do: The other Extra Trial cars have some religious references present in the Japanese version edited out internationally:
|
- The spoiler decal on the DRT-tuned Lizard Nightmare differs between versions. The Japanese version has "DEATH" and "Sacrifice" written on its top and bottom respectfully, while the international versions have "NIGHTMARE" and "Lizard" instead. Now that's metal.
| Japan | International |
|---|---|
- The title screen also differs between the three versions. The Japanese version has a field of somewhat pompous text below the logo. The European version simply displays "Ridge Racer Type 4" in a different font without the "R4" and the text. The US version has the full logo from the Japanese title screen but no text.

|---|---|---|
- The race loading screens also show differences between the international and Japanese versions. The Japanese version has another text field that shows which racetrack and event is chosen currently, while the international versions simply have no such thing.

|
|
- During the first few seconds of the Grand Prix intro, glaring differences can be seen. The Japanese version does not show the first "Welcome to Real Racing Roots" text and has the RRR pillars present. The European version does not have the pillars and lacks the Real Racing Roots '99 text below its logo but still has the greeting text dialogue appear earlier than the Japanese version (The "Attention please" message was also removed outside Japan.). The US version, being the most cluttered, shows a text box greeting the player and includes the RRR pillars.
| Japan | Europe | US |
|---|---|---|
- This message congratulates you on beating the Grand Prix, but it only appears in the Japanese version.
- Several billboards from the Japanese version were either removed or translated in the international versions.
