Shiren the Wanderer, despite its seemingly straightforward name, is actually the third game in the main Shiren series, the sixth Shiren game released (not counting remakes or spinoffs), and one among several dozen Mystery Dungeon games. Like all of those titles, it is a roguelike with a strong narrative focus and narrow but highly nuanced mechanics. Enthusiasm among series fans was apparently dampened by significantly below-average difficulty and an unwieldy system for controlling party members. It was later released on PSP with some tweaks and all download content, but only in Japan.

This particular title was part of Sega's partnership with Chunsoft, but Sega didn't handle localization as they did with the overseas DS release of Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer, leaving Atlus to claim that this is the first Shiren game released outside Japan (and in fact, Sega doesn't appear to be credited at all).

Regional Differences

The Japanese version had a few online features, but Atlus cut the Rescue, Versus, and Item Transfer features from the American version rather than implement them via Friend Codes.
