Unused Units

Cataphract

The Cataphract is an unused Greek Cavalry unit available only in the Editor, it was the original unique unit for Hades prior to the Gastraphetes. The Cataphract model was later reused for Achilles, the latter used a model based off that of the cut Greek Hero. This is why in the final game Achilles is the only hero unit whose appearance changes upon researching the armory shield upgrades. The unit has a hero glow.

History

Cataphract

Cataphracts are strong against infantry. Originally refering to any armored soldier (including ships) the word "cataphract" was eventually reserved for heavily armored horses, particularly those used by the Sassanids or Byzantines. The elite cataphract of the Greek Byzantine Empire wore chain mail armor on both himself and his mount. These men could shoot composite bows from the saddle or engage the enemy with a spear or sword. They could out-range or evade enemy foot troops, or out armor enemy light cavalry. The Greek Byzantine army had a tradition of good horsemanship because much of their territory was plains or steppe, and the empire was sufficiently wealthy to provide the training and Cataphract's expensive equipment.

Upgrade System

At some point in the game, perhaps in 2001, there was a unit upgrade system of some sorts, where certain units, upon gaining some combat experience, are upgraded into better and more powerful units. Most upgraded units forms were cut later on, while some base units such as the Egyptian Archer and the Norse Hirdman and Archer were cut entirely. The Myrmidon, Hersir and the Cataphract were turned into base units but the latter was also cut.

Your Champion Hoplites have been upgraded to Myrmidons!
Your Champion Hirdmen have been upgraded to mighty Hersir!
Your Champion Chariots have been improved to elite Scythe Chariots!
