The Wii U is Nintendo's seventh home console and yet another iteration of the venerable GameCube architecture, featuring a tri-core PowerPC CPU and AMD GPU. Naturally, it is backwards compatible with Wii games and accessories, and is able to upscale the former to HD resolutions. Unfortunately, despite its great variety of titles, the lack of real innovations (GamePad controller aside), relatively weak hardware, and poor third-party support kept the console from really taking off. That, and the console's name supposedly caused market confusion as to whether it was a new console, or a Wii peripheral.

Nowadays, it's mostly seen as a failure and laughing stock on the same level as the Virtual Boy, though it did at least help pave the way for the much more successful Nintendo Switch.
