Hmmm...
To do:

Initially a spin-off in the Colin McRae Rally series turned into a beast of its own. Featuring Travis Pastrana from the Race of Champions series and Christian, your fellow co-driver.

Unused Cars

In the /cars folder, there are 3 codenames for unused cars, namely cmp, sko and ply. All of them are empty except for ply, which has camera, suspension and performance data for the car, but no models, textures or anything to give an exact clue as to what it would've been.

Unused Audio

Hmmm...
To do:
  • There's a ton of commented lines in speech.xml. Making a separate subpage just for this extra narration is recommended.

Greeting Lines

These are lines that would play when you bootup the game. There's 5 of them with 2 of them being used and the rest being here, using early names for the game. These lines were also translated into other languages.

Demo Leftovers

Hmmm...
To do:
How many of these are actually used in the demo?

Judging by these sounds, the demo of the game was gonna be a lot more than just 3 races in a few disciplines. Some of these are used in the demo, but they still count as unused content due to them being left in the final game. Ones that aren't commented off in speech.xml are indicated with a star. (*)

Version Differences

Following McRae's unfortunate death on September 15, 2007, Codemasters had to disassociate the DiRT franchise from McRae's name. This led to every subsequent release of the game simply being renamed to DiRT and every game after DiRT 2 not having Colin McRae's name in the title. Before this though, America already had the game be called that name. DiRT 2 was allowed to have Colin's name in the title because it was more of a memorial for him. And a damn good one at that.

The major differences in this version are the aforementioned different branding and Travis' narration being changed to accommodate the different title. The car select explanations for the 1995 Subaru Impreza, Colin McRae R4, Colin McRae MK. 2 Escort and the Nissan Pickup Dakar were changed. Same also went for any line mentioning Colin McRae. They were either made easier to understand for people that didn't know Colin or had his name removed from a line if it wasn't that needed.

In addition, the US release appears to be slightly easier, as the file ai/difficulty_settings.xml is set to lower AI difficulty by two points (on a scale of 100) across all difficulty levels when the game region string is set to "usa".

Unused Text

Contained within the game's English and French "languagedata" files is the following exchange from Act 1, Scene 1 of William Shakespeare's "Much ado About Nothing". Bizarrely, at the end, it seems to contain a button prompt.:

  [p] [m:actor]Leonato[m:]
I learn in this letter that Don Peter of Arragon
  comes this night to Messina.

  [p] [m:actor]Messenger[m:]
He is very near by this: he was not three leagues off
  when I left him.

  [p] [m:actor]Leonato[m:]
How many gentlemen have you lost in this action?

  [p] [m:actor]Messenger[m:]
But few of any sort, and none of name.

  [p] [m:actor]Leonato[m:]
A victory is twice itself when the achiever brings
home full numbers. I find here that Don Peter hath
bestowed much honour on a young Florentine called Claudio.

  [p] [m:actor]Messenger[m:]
Much deserved on his part and equally remembered by
Don Pedro: he hath borne himself beyond the
promise of his age, doing, in the figure of a lamb,
the feats of a lion: he hath indeed better
bettered expectation than you must expect of me to
  tell you how.

  [p] [m:actor]Leonato[m:]
He hath an uncle here in Messina will be very much
  glad of it.

  [p] [m:actor]Messenger[m:]
I have already delivered him letters, and there
appears much joy in him; even so much that joy could
not show itself modest enough without a badge of
  bitterness.

  [p] [m:actor]Leonato[m:]
Did he break out into tears?

  [p] [m:actor]Messenger[m:]
  In great measure.

  [p] [m:actor]Leonato[m:]
A kind overflow of kindness: there are no faces
truer than those that are so washed. How much
better is it to weeat joy than to joy at weeping!

  [p] [m:actor]Beatrice[m:]
I pray you, is Signior Mountanto returned from the
  wars or no?

  [p] [m:actor]Messenger[m:]
I know none of that name, lady: there was none such
in the army of any sort.

  [p] [m:actor]Leonato[m:]
What is he that you ask for, niece?

  [p] [m:actor]Hero[m:]
My cousin means Signior Benedick of Padua.

  [p] [m:actor]Messenger[m:]
O, he's returned; and as pleasant as ever he was.

  [p] [m:actor]Beatrice[m:]
He set up his bills here in Messina and challenged
Cupid at the flight; and my uncle's fool, reading
the challenge, subscribed for Cupid, and challenged
him at the bird-bolt. I pray you, how many hath he
killed and eaten in these wars? But how many hath
he killed? for indeed I promised to eat all of his killing.

  [p] [m:actor]Leonato[m:]
  Faith, niece, you tax Signior Benedick too much;
but he'll be meet with you, I doubt it not.

  [p] [m:actor]Messenger[m:]
He hath done good service, lady, in these wars.

  [p] [m:actor]Beatrice[m:]
You had musty victual, and he hath holp to eat it:
he is a very valiant trencherman; he hath an
  excellent stomach.

  [p] [m:actor]Messenger[m:]
And a good soldier too, lady.

  [p] [m:actor]Beatrice[m:]
And a good soldier to a lady: but what is he to a lord?

  [p] [m:actor]Messenger[m:]
A lord to a lord, a man to a man; stuffed with all
  honourable virtues.

  [p] [m:actor]Beatrice[m:]
It is so, indeed; he is no less than a stuffed man:
but for the stuffing,--well, we are all mortal.

  [p] [m:actor]Leonato[m:]
You must not, sir, mistake my niece. There is a
kind of merry war betwixt Signior Benedick and her:
they never meet but there's a skirmish of wit
  between them.

  [p] [m:actor]Beatrice[m:]
Alas! he gets nothing by that. In our last
conflict four of his five wits went halting off, and
now is the whole man governed with one: so that if
he have wit enough to keep himself warm, let him
bear it for a difference between himself and his
horse; for it is all the wealth that he hath left,
to be known a reasonable creature. Who is his
companion now? He hath every month a new sworn brother.

  [p] [m:actor]Messenger[m:]
  Is't possible?

  [p] [m:actor]Beatrice[m:]
Very easily possible: he wears his faith but as
the fashion of his hat; it ever changes with the
  next block.

  [p] [m:actor]Messenger[m:]
I see, lady, the gentleman is not in your books.

  [p] [m:actor]Beatrice[m:]
No; an he were, I would burn my study. But, I pray
you, who is his companion? Is there no young
squarer now that will make a voyage with him to the devil?

  [p] [m:actor]Messenger[m:]
He is most in the company of the right noble Claudio.

  [p] [m:actor]Beatrice[m:]
O Lord, he will hang upon him like a disease: he
is sooner caught than the pestilence, and the taker
runs presently mad. God help the noble Claudio! if
he have caught the Benedick, it will cost him a
thousand pound ere a' be cured.

  [p] [m:actor]Messenger[m:]
I will hold friends with you, lady.

  [p] [m:actor]Beatrice[m:]
  Do, good friend.

  [p] [m:actor]Leonato[m:]
You will never run mad, niece.

  [p] [m:actor]Beatrice[m:]
No, not till a hot January.

  [p] [m:actor]Messenger[m:]
  Don Pedro is [o:controller_icons.xbox_a] approached.
