Sonic and the Black Knight is third Sonic title on the Nintendo Wii and the follow-up to Sonic and the Secret Rings. After being teleported to the world of Camelot by a wizard named Merlina, Sonic must go on a journey to become a true knight in order to defeat King Arthur, who's been corrupted by the Scabbard of Excalibur. This leads to Sonic going through medieval lands, meeting new but familiar looking people, and discovering a shocking truth.

While Sonic and the Black Knight wasn't liked by fans and critics at the time for having Sonic wield a sword (which was mocked relentlessly in the media), the game has over time become more appreciated due to its fun gameplay and having some of the strongest writing and themes in the series. Unfortunately though, this would be the last entry in the series to feature Jason Griffith as the voice of Sonic, Shadow, and Jet, as the entire 4Kids voice cast (Except for Mike Pollock as Eggman) would be replaced with the Studiopolis voice cast, starting with Sonic Free Riders.

Unused Models

PrimModels

primModels.one contains basic geometric objects for debugging purposes. Several of these models are also taken from Shadow the Hedgehog.

Stg901

STBKCircleStage.png

Stg901 has a test level that goes around in a loop. It's mostly similar to the unused test level in Secret Rings.

Stg902

STBKSandOasis.png

Stg902 contains the entirety of Sand Oasis, the second level in Secret Rings. This was likely used as a placeholder stage during development.

Stg903

STBKTestLevel.png

Stg903 features a test level with long dirt roads surrounded by grass and mountains.

Stg904

STBKWeirdStage.png

Within stg904, there's a test level with multiple different curves and angles. It also has some water for Sonic to walk through.

Stg905

STBKTestLevel2.png

Stg905 contains a test level that's purely meant to test the width for platforms, shown by the text on the grass.

Silver

STKBSilver.png

CH.SILVER.gno has a unused model of Silver in his non-armored outfit. Considering you can play as Shadow, Knuckles, and Blaze in their normal attire, the same was likely going to happen for Silver before the idea was scrapped.

Jet/Sir Lamorak eyes

STKBJeteyes.png

Jet aka Sir Lamorak actually has eyes under his helmet, which is never seen normally in-game.

Green Fish-One

STBKEvilGazer.png

There's a green variant of the "Fish-One" enemy type, which is never encountered anywhere in the game.

Number 1 & 2

STBKNumbers.png

Two pillars with the numbers "one" and "two" can be found in water_test.gno and the stg902 folder, which contains Sand Oasis. What makes it odd is that the model cannot be found in the folder that has Sand Oasis in Secret Rings, meaning this was added during Black Knight's development.

Purple Triangle

STBKTriangle.png

Root.gno contains a pretty simple purple triangle. What it was originally used for is currently unknown.

Unused Cinematics

e00018.sfd/e0210.sfd

The movie folder contains two byte-for-byte identical SFD files with different names: e0018.sfd and e0210.sfd. They contain no audio and appear to be a very slightly earlier version of the sixth cutscene in the game, with most of the differences being in colors and closeup details, as well as an uncropped frame (all the "storybook"-style cutscenes in the final game are cropped by 20 pixels at the sides).

Oddly enough, the Japanese subtitles that are part of the movies also refer to Merlina as "Merlin", possibly due to a typo. The final game's cutscenes doesn't bake in the subtitles, presumably for localization purposes.

Unused Sounds

Gale Drive

Sonic's gameplay voice clip directory includes two unused audio files. The first indicates an attack is ready, while the other is Sonic calling out some sort of "Gale Drive" move.

"Blitz" Quotes

The four main playable characters (Sonic, Shadow/Lancelot, Knuckles/Gawain, and Blaze/Percival) all have unused voice lines referring to elemental "Blitz" attacks. There are six total: Fire Blitz, Thunder Blitz, Ice Blitz, Venom Blitz, Panic Blitz, and Stone Blitz. Each attack's effects are described, sounding like some sort of special enemy or boss would make use of them. Some voice files seem incomplete, reusing previous clips as placeholders or including the voice actors breathing between takes.
