It's basically Pac-Man Kart.

Wait, didn't he just appear in another Kart Racer last year?

Hmmm...
To do:
There's a build of the canned Xbox version. [Video] [Hidden Palace page]

Unused Video

Intro_OLD.thp

movies\NGC\Intro_OLD.thp in the GameCube version is an early version of the game's intro. The main differences are a temporary title card and logos at the beginning instead of Pac-Man being chased by a ghost.

Unused Audio

FMV01_48kHzAudio.wav.adp

streams\FMV01_48kHzAudio.wav.adp in the GameCube version is an audio file with scratch track dialogue from Snoopy vs. The Red Baron, another game by Smart Bomb Interactive. (Please note that the original audio had long pauses of silence.)

ArcticIc.wav.adp

streams\ArcticIc.wav.adp in the GameCube version is an early track for the Arctic Iceberg course. Unlike the final music, and every other music track in the game, it's rather short, and fades out at the end, instead of just stopping abruptly.

oldMidi.ogg

streams\Win32\oldMidi.ogg in the PC version seems to be a duplicate of the track for the Retro Maze course. Whether this is used for the menus is unknown.

Subterra.ogg

streams\Win32\Subterra.ogg in the PC version is the track for the Subterranean Speedway course from the PSP version. Of course, that course isn't accessible in the PC version.

Unused Graphics

Gamecube Alpha Textures

Some Alpha textures in the Gamecube version use 2 separate textures, 1 opaque and 1 greyscale that are combined to create an alpha effect. In the opaque minimap textures some scale and coordinate information can be seen:

The Ghost Mansion & Lunar Launch Minimaps also appear in their respective arena files. However, they are not seen.

Unused Text

bsfile in the root of the GameCube version directory says this.

This file is use so that the dvd status can correctly be polled.
DVDGetStatus will not return errors unless actual commands are being processed.
This file is being streamed every 500ms so that our dvd error messages are consitent.

Version Differences

Hmmm...
To do:
Document further differences between the other versions.

PSP Version

Even though all versions were released around the same time, the PSP version, for some inexplicable reason, contains much more content than the other versions. The content exclusive to the PSP release includes:

  • Two additional characters - Mr. Driller and Mappy
  • An additional track in the Classic Cup - Subterranean Speedway
    • Strangely, this track can still be seen in the opening intro video in all versions of the game, meaning that it must've been cut late from the other releases for some reason.
  • Two additional battle arenas - Arctic Iceberg and Spooky's Castle
  • An entire Challenges mode, which contains the following modes:
    • Time Trial - A mode where you race through the track as fast as possible. Also present in the other versions.
    • Letter Hunt - A mode in which you try to collect all the letters that spell Pac-Man.
    • Clockbuster - A mode where you try to collect as many Pac-Dots as you can before the time ends, with clock pickups extending the timer.

Additionally, likely due to hardware limitations, the PSP version can only have up to five CPU racers at a time whereas the other versions allow up to seven.
