2006 is when the seventh generation really starts to form, as the PlayStation 3 and the Wii are released, along with a couple of the early killer apps for the three consoles. Apple also finalizes the shift of Mac OS X (now macOS) from PowerPC to x86 processors, which at first causes quite a commotion within the Mac community. Windows Vista is released, causing a big controversy with its high hardware demands and older software compatibility. The Go!Cam for the PlayStation Portable is released in Japan, where certain games take advantage of it.

Roblox is officially released to the public, while Mother 3 and Prey come out after many years of development complications. Sam & Max makes a return to the traditional point-and-click formula with a new entry in the series, and overall paints a revival towards that genre. Pokémon Diamond and Pearl brings online play and trading to the franchise, for years to come.

Also, the HyperScan is released to dismal reception and sales, leaving it to be discontinued a little more than a year later. The Game Boy Advance has its last first party game released for it, that game being Rhythm Tengoku. Tiger Telematics goes bankrupt, taking the ill-fated Gizmondo with it.
