Considered by many people as a terrible year thanks to the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 still had a lot of unexpected events in the field of gaming. First, there was the odd friendship between Doomguy and Isabelle (due to someone pointing out Doom Eternal was releasing the same day as Animal Crossing: New Horizons). Then, Half-Life: Alyx was released, the first new Half-Life game in 13 years. Nintendo celebrated the 35th Anniversary of Super Mario Bros. with Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Super Mario Bros. 35, and Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros.. Streets of Rage 4 brought back the Streets of Rage franchise after over 25 years.

Two ambitious games that spent years in development, Final Fantasy VII Remake (the first in a trilogy) and Cyberpunk 2077 were finally released. The former was met with a generally-favorable reception and the latter was met with a rather mixed reception (though later PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions as well as a DLC expansion really turned the game around).

Apple began its historic three-year transition from x86 processors to its custom processors for its Mac lineup, enabling performance levels that are equal to x64 computers, but with lower energy use. The year was capped off by the launches of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S and Series X, though it was especially hard to get either system on or after launch due to them selling out quickly, major supply shortages, and those damned opportunistic high-price resellers.

In other news, the video game movie curse began to break with Paramount's Sonic The Hedgehog, released to critical acclaim after a million-dollar Sonic redesign from last year.
