Nintendo began gearing up for their heavily-rumored next console, so Switch releases started to wind down this year. However, what releases they did have consisted of new games in dormant franchises (Princess Peach: Showtime!, Mario & Luigi: Brothership and even Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club) and remakes (the much-anticipated Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door). Sony released the critically acclaimed PS5 exclusive Astro Bot, and later, the $699.99 PlayStation 5 Pro, a new model emphasizing further graphical detail (vertical stand and disc drive sold separately). In October, 343 Industries rebranded as Halo Studios, marking the start of a new era for Halo. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (the second in a trilogy) was finally released after four years. Balatro was also released, which was a unique twist of poker and Magic the Gathering.

Sega celebrated the Year of Shadow (not unlike Nintendo with a certain green plumber 11 years prior) with various media and events centered around the brooding hedgehog. One such celebration is a brand-new story attached to a remaster of 2011's fan-favorite Sonic Generations, featuring Shadow and other characters from Shadow the Hedgehog, most notably Black Doom. Then, there's Paramount Pictures' Sonic the Hedgehog 3, a film which is prominently centered around the character and has tie-in DLC for Generations, both of which star Keanu Reeves as the voice of Shadow.

Many things also came to an end this year: At the end of March, Ubisoft shut down their online-exclusive title The Crew, with no way of playing the game offline. This caused mass outrage in the gaming community, and leading to the creation of the Stop Killing Games movement. Nintendo controversially cut the cord on the Nintendo Network in April, completely ending online services for the 3DS and Wii U, while Microsoft closed down the Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace in July after nearly two decades of service. In September, Disney shut down the DisneyNow mobile app and delisted the website's entire Games section in November, with such games as Disney All-Star Racers going defunct. GameStop's Game Informer, the longest-running video gaming magazine, ceased publication until being brought back the following year.

Infamously, Sony’s ambitious live service game Concord released in August and went kaput almost immediately, discontinuing sales and going offline a mere two weeks later. Then its planned revival was cancelled by the end of October, taking its developer down with it. Nintendo waged war on piracy and put an end to the Citra emulator for 3DS and both the Yuzu and RyujinX emulators for Switch.
